Have you ever wondered whether there is a golden key that will unlock the secret to living a happy and
contented life?
I certainly have.
And during the course of my pursuit of interesting and useful stuff to bring you, I've come across some recurring themes. It seems that if you want happiness and contentment, then these are the ten most reliable ways of achieving it:
Get In The
Habit Of Acting Selflessly.
If
you want to feel good, do good! That’s the key to selfless living. By acting in
he best interests of other people, we set ourselves up to feel good about
ourselves too. The giving of our time,
energy and selves leaves is happier and healthier.
Foster Great Relationships.
By
actively working on forging great relationships, we make ourselves feel good,
fulfilled and supported. By building a network of strong social contacts,
studies have shown that there are both emotional and physical benefits that can
be gained. Broader networks bring a sense
of belonging so start reaching out to others today.
Take care of Yourself by Exercising.
Healthy
mind, healthy body and vice verse! Get enough sleep and take a break from
routine from time to time. You don’t need to take part in any complicated sports,
just go for a regular, brisk walk two or three times a week.
Keep Your Mind Active By Learning New
Things
Having
a healthy body isn’t much use if your brain has turned to mush so make sure
that you keep your little grey cells active by learning new skills. Choose
something that interests you and make it your business to master that topic.
Remain Alert To What Is Going On Around
You
Don’t
sleepwalk through life – keep your eyes and ears open to what is going on
around you. Train yourself to notice the small things that so many people miss
– birdsong, colors or the faces of people who pass you in the street. The list
is endless.
Branch Out In A New Direction
Bring
a challenge goal into your life, whether that is to take more exercise, lose a
little weight or learn a new language. Find something to work towards and focus
on achieving this successfully.
Don’t Give Up!
Inevitably
obstacles and roadblocks will spring up in your path from time to time. Don’t
view than as reasons to give up - see them as challenges to be overcome and
work towards find a way around them. Never allow yourself to say, ‘it’s too hard and I can’t do it!’ Instead,
hear yourself say ‘I may not be able to
do this yet but I’ll find a way to beat it!’
Be Positive and Bounce Back
When
life gets tough and knocks you down, just remember that you only have to get up
one time more than you fall and you come out a winner! We cannot choose what
happens to us but we can choose our attitude towards events. It may not always
easy but resilience, like many other life skills, can be learned.
Love Yourself
Unless
you have lots of cash to spend on plastic surgery and intensive therapy, you
cannot change the person you truly are. You may want to be a different shape or
have straighter/curlier/shinier hair but realistically, we are who we are
and the most healthy way of living is to
be comfortable and accepting of ourselves. Dwelling on our imperfections makes it much harder to be happy so stop
comparing yourself unfavorably to others and start concentrating on your good
points!
Find Meaning in Life
We
all want to feel that there is a point to our existence and those people who
manage to find meaning and purpose in their lives are generally happier and
feel more in control of things. They
also suffer less stress, anxiety and depression. This sense of purpose will be
different for everyone but often belonging to a larger group with a common,
beneficial purpose will satisfy that need.
